Hats off to Mr. Stevens!

Volume II of James Stevens’ account of his round-the-world bicycle journey is even more engaging than the introductory volume. He soldiers on on his unwieldy “wheel”, through increasingly challenging terrain, more meager rations, serious language difficulties, and diminishing hospitality on the part of the people he encounters. Though the book was in hand as evidence, I sometimes wondered how he could possibly survive the rigors of the trip. Picture raw eggs and a pomegranate as a day’s ration.

Survive he did, suffering only a sprain and a bout of malaria, and retaining his sense of humor throughout. What softies we are today, compared to the intrepid Mr. Stevens!
